An unexpected outcome: a crucial 3% of English voters switched to the Tories, having said something else in the opinion polls. Cameron clearly can carry on with a choice of minor parties to give him a small majority. But he is pledged to have a referendum on exiting the European Union.
But I’d also expect Britons to vote to stay in. This could also finish UKIP and restore Labour. There is a general anti-Establishment mood, but if an exit from the European Union were once again rejected, the focus would have to switch.
As expected, the Scottish Nationalists made a great advance while the Liberal Democrats have almost vanished. They will now be pushing for a new Referendum to separate Scotland, and are very likely to win it.
